Just a question about my blog layout. Is it too blue? Should I add in one more colour just to break it up? Or is it ok as it is?

Character Profile- Hero

A little note on the meaning of the name. I chose this for the hero based on its meaning. After researching up names of flowers I found a website with a list of different flowers and what they represent. It said that Snowdrop represented hope, which I thought worked well with

Flower Names and Meanings

The 'little' at the front is seen as a cliched Indian name.

The Bad Guy

My bad guy now with legs. I'm rather pleased wit how this turned out. I've tried to give him feet where if he wishes to, he could use the bolds at the side as a pair of wheels. His hands are simple flat pieces of metal with sharp points on the end. this would enable him to pick up objects, however they wouldn't be able to do anything delicate. His hands are more for hitting and destorying things.

Character Design Class 7

This week in character design we looked at animal anatomy. Although not obvious animals share the same body structure as humans. However it is not always easy to see, especially in animals such as birds, horses and other hoofed animals. We also looked at how to create monsters by combining different animals to make one. One of the best examples of this is the Centaur, consisting of half human, half horse.





We were then given a certain habitat and then asked to produce some monsters and creatures which would live there. My habitat was 'The Ocean'. Looking up what creatures live there I came up with these

MCM EXo- Sunday

On Sunday I visited the MCM Expo in London with a few friends. I had a very postmodern experience.







Although it may not seem it I was dressed up as Rose Tyler from Doctor Who (though my costume wasn't very good).



My free hugs sign. It's rather blurry so here's what it says. 'Free Hugs, Got separated from the Doctor because of Daleks and Aliens. Please help me find the TARDIS!'

Upon wondering around, we spotted two people dressed up as 'Aliens'. Although appearing to be the creatures from the film, one of them is in fact based upon the character 'Abe' from the online fan made comic called 'Alien Loves Predator'. I was trying my best to look slightly scared.



One person dressed up as the 11th Doctor even had a remote controlled Dalek with him.







I managed to get a hug from one of the storm troopers. The guy in the last one was brilliant for he was able to carry around the huge sword around with him. However what no one knew was he was able to do this regardless of being blind.















Overall it was a great day out. I look forward to going next year and this time with a better costume hopefully.

The Sidekick

For my sidekick I tried to go for a matronly personality. My sidekick will be old in appearance and slightly clumsy. However when faced with danger they'll turn around and be able to deal a strong blow. To begin with I was struggling to come up with an idea of what Native American animal to use as the ones I chose didn't seem to fit my character's personality. To begin with I looked at eagles, goats, snakes and hippos to try and get an idea of what animal I could use. However I was told I should stick with birds and to keep the sidekick herbivore so as to really distinguish who is good and who is bad.



I then went onto look at a variety of different birds, including geese, trying to stick with the Native American theme. Upon browsing the list of animals from Native American Totems I spotted that grouse was amongst the birds listed. Looking up some images of the grouse I instantly saw how my character would look like. I also looked at Disney- Robin Hood and the Simpsons to help me visualize my character ore easily.

I was aiming for the slightly loud, clumsy and yet wiser characteristic for my sidekick. I've also decided that she sidekick will be female as the hero will see her as a motherly figure due to never knowing their own related parents.







I was told my sidekick character is pretty good, but could use some exaggeration on the hair.

The House of Wax- 1953

The House of Wax is a film created in 1953 and is an American Horror film. It was directed by André De Toth and is a very close remake of 'Mystery of the Wax Museum'. The genre of horror during this period of time was changing. In the 1930’s and 1940’s the horror genre in cinema consisted of gothic horror tales such as adaptations of Dracula and Frankenstein. During the 1950’s horror took on a new direction, leading to the atomic-age, ‘much was made of the modern effects of radioactivity exposure, toxic chemical spills, or other scientific accidents’. The House of Wax represents a bridge between 1930’s horror and the atomic age of the 1950’s.

Horror Films Part 2

The film also reminded me of ‘The Uncanny Valley’. The Uncanny Valley was something we covered during our first year. It is where an object takes on the resemblance of a human but has faults. The wax figures in the museum fall into the Uncanny Valley because they look very realistic but they’re not alive. The idea of standing amongst the figures in the dark on ones own is what gives the film its horrific feel.



The subtitle use of 3D shows the film’s advance in technology. The scene in question is when a paddleball man advertising the opening of the museum hits the ball towards the camera. Although the 3D technology was not as advanced as it is today, the scene would have awed audiences of the time.



The plot starts of with wax sculptor Professor Henry Jarrod making wax figures. His business partner Matthew Burke wants to include macabre exhibits to increase profits. However Jarrod disagrees strongly against the idea. In an attempt to claim the insurance money, Burke sets fire to the museum, leaving Jarrod trapped inside the building.

Years later Jarrod, disfigured and crippled because of the fire starts up a new museum of wax figures. In this he includes horrific scenes of crime from the past up to present ones. This includes the mysterious hanging of his old business partner, as well as the death of Burke’s fiancée Cathy Gray. However Cathy’s roommate Sue Allen comes face to face with the killer, a disfigured figure only just able to walk.



After a chase around the streets of New York, Sue escaped the figures clutches and stays with Later Cathy’s body is then stolen from the morgue. Upon visiting the new museum, Sue gets suspicious of the new waxed figure of ‘Joan of Ark’, pointing out that it has an uncanny resemblance of Cathy. When Sue is then asked to be the model for Jarrod’s favorite wax figure, Marie Antoinette, the horrific truth of the wax figures realism starts to come to light.



I rather enjoyed the film and was glad it wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. I was also rather impressed with the 3D scene. Although the 3D effects in the film were very simple and not very technologically advanced, I discovered that I found the ball being bounced towards the camera more believable than the effects of modern 3D.
